Finding Educational Opportunity

Approximately 46% of jobs in New York State require a college degree, yet only 39% of the workforce has one. In Oneida County, a place where the percentage of college educated adults is 10% less than the state average, one community college decided to step in and help. Named the Educational Opportunity Center, this new resource offered by Mohawk Valley Community College (an institution which awards credit for DSST exams) will focus on increasing enrollment of adults in post-secondary education through community outreach and college preparation services in downtown Utica and the surrounding areas.

The center will essentially be a one stop shop for getting adults back into the classroom by providing the following services:

  • Tutoring to prepare people for post-secondary level academics & entrance exams
  • Academic advising
  • Mentoring
  • Assistance with the application process
  • Guidance on financial aid & student loans

Said Randall VanWagoner, President of Mohawk Valley Community College, on the Educational Opportunity Center: “Increasing college enrollment puts more people on degree tracks that equip them to take control of the future. We’ve built a program that will start at the individual’s viewpoint, develop solutions to meet those unique goals, and place that person in a learning environment where they are now poised for success and can take that step towards a better life. By starting from this very personal perspective, we are building a stronger community, one student at a time.”

According to VanWagoner, the center will serve an estimated 1,000 people per year, all of whom will be eager to graduate college quickly and cheaply in order to secure a better job faster and with less debt. With DSST, these students can earn a significant number of credits towards their degree via 38 unique subject exams that cost just $80 per test (plus a sitting fee).
