How to Study When You’re On the Go

Your exam date is approaching and you feel a rush of panic come over you. You know you are neither prepared nor ready to take the test. What should you do? Cramming for an exam over a short period of time can be detrimental to your performance. Although you may feel like you are learning a lot of information, your brain has no real time to process it all, resulting in a decreased ability to recall information during a timed test. Instead of subjecting yourself to this tactic, try to maximize small down times in your day by quizzing yourself. Here’s how you can study quickly while you’re on the go. 

At the Gym

Instead of blasting your favorite tunes on your headphones, listen to a test preparation audiobook. It may not give you the energy boost you need to get your heart rate going, but it does allow you to optimize this span of time for learning. offers some audio studio guides for roughly $12 each. If you can’t purchase an audiobook online, then make one yourself! You can easily use the recorder application on your phone or computer to record important information or facts that you need to memorize for a test. If you decide to study at the gym, opt for a low-intensity workout that involves a stationary bike or treadmill – these machines allow you to multitask and have an efficient workout session. 

On Public Transportation

Do you find yourself spending the lag time between train and bus stops zoning out? Use these moments to quickly quiz yourself on concepts that you already know. The process of routine and repetition helps your brain store information on a subconscious level so that you will be able to easily recall an answer when you see a question on a test. Try not to quiz yourself on new topics while in transit; your brain will also be working actively to help you remember your stop and you more than likely won’t be able to recall this new information later.

While Waiting in Line

If you find yourself waiting in a long line to get into a movie or event, use that time to brush up on exam questions that you find troubling. This is also a good time to focus on new concepts or information. Although there may be a lot of people in line, your brain can easily tune out large crowds so that you are able to focus in on what you’re working on. Download flash cards and study materials to your smartphone so you don’t have to rely on Wi-Fi to access them.

With Your Friends

If you’re chatting on the phone or simply getting ready to head out for a night on the town, have your friends rapidly quiz you with practice exam questions. Keep things light-hearted and fun so that your mind feels relaxed and you are able to naturally recall answers. Having your friends help you study is a low-stress way to prepare for your exam. Don’t do this every time you see them though – your mind needs rest in order to process new information.

In the Doctor’s Office

Most waiting rooms are typically quiet and cozy, making it easy to nod off on reading materials. Instead of lugging a book with you that you may not read, download an educational game that allows you to test your exam knowledge. A bright, interactive game will energize your brain so that it remains active and alert. It’s also a fun way to squeeze some extra studying into your day.
