Active Duty & Veteran Military Members

Funded and Here to Support You!

DSST exams allow military personnel to further their educational goals while in the service – whether they are deployed or located on a military base.

For over 30 years, DANTES has offered and supported voluntary educational programs on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense. In 2006, DANTES authorized up-front funding of DSST exam fees for eligible military members at authorized National Test Centers that administer the Internet-based DSST exams.

DANTES Retesting Policy

Exam fees for the first attempt at any DSST title are covered by DANTES for eligible military service members. Service members are responsible for funding a retest of any DSST exam title if they do not receive a passing score.

If you have questions about this policy, please contact your Base Education Office.

Transitioning to Civilian Life

Though you may not realize it, you probably have already taken some DSST exams while you were in the service. You may also have tuition assistance benefits that expire at a future date. Statistics show that 30% of active-duty service members never use their veteran’s education benefits.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides tuition assistance for eligible military service members and veterans for up to 36 months. If you don’t use your benefits within the required time, you’ll lose them.

Did You Know?

Veterans eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill can be reimbursed for DSST exams. The DSST Credit-by-Exam Program is an approved VA National Testing Program. The VA will reimburse the DSST exam fee ($100) and the testing center administrative fee (amount varies per location). For more information on DSST fee reimbursement, visit the Post 9/11 GI Bill Website.

Note: In order to get reimbursement for DSST exams, you must submit a receipt or proof of payment to the VA.
